In the Czech Republic, a vignette requirement is in effect. The vignette in the Czech Republic is an important tool for financing and maintaining the road network. You can purchase the digital vignette from us. A detailed explanation of which vignette you may need and whether you need one at all can be found in our article on toll and vignette regulations in the Czech Republic.
The toll obligation in the Czech Republic applies to all motor vehicles driving on highways and expressways. The toll requirement applies to both domestic and foreign vehicles with at least 4 wheels, as long as the maximum authorized weight does not exceed 3.5 tons and the vehicle is driving on a highway or expressway. Trailers and motorcycles are exempt from the toll. Vehicles with a total weight over 3.5 tons are required to pay a distance-based toll and do not need to purchase a vignette. Instead, they must carry an onboard unit that can be obtained locally. This device is used to determine the amount of toll due, based on the distance traveled and the category of the vehicle.
There are some exceptions: You can drive almost the entire D0 motorway, as well as parts of the D1 and D5, without a vignette.
Toll regulations and compliance with them are not only legally binding but also contribute to supporting the transport system in the Czech Republic. Non-compliance may lead to serious financial and legal consequences, making it advisable to familiarize yourself with the toll system and to take the necessary steps for registration and toll payment without delay.
If you drive in the Czech Republic without a valid (digital) vignette, you can expect a fine. Learn how high it can be and what other penalties may apply in this section.
Failure to pay the toll in the Czech Republic is not tolerated and can lead to serious consequences. Toll compliance is monitored both manually by traffic police and automatically via camera systems. Avoiding the system is not possible, as monitoring is primarily automated. Your license plate is captured by special toll bridges on highways and expressways and checked against the toll database. If your plate is not recognized, the highway police are notified.
If you violate the vignette requirement, fines will be imposed, which can vary depending on the extent and duration of the violation. In addition to monetary fines, legal consequences may follow, which can hinder further participation in road traffic.
If you're caught driving on toll roads in the Czech Republic without a valid vignette, the fine can be up to 20,000 CZK (approximately 800 euros).
It gets much more expensive if it becomes a legal matter. Then the fine can be up to 100,000 CZK (around 4,000 euros). This applies, for example, if you falsely apply for a vignette exemption without being eligible. You must also be proven to have intentionally attempted to deceive the system. Since this is difficult to prove, we strongly recommend purchasing a vignette.
