If you are on your way from Dresden to Prague, you should expect traffic jams. On the Autobahn D8/E55 in the Czech Republic, near the German border, two tunnels (Panenská and Libouchec) will be undergoing repairs until October 8, 2025. Full and partial closures are unavoidable. During the work, only one of the tunnel tubes will be accessible at a time, and the risk of traffic jams is high. However, there is one advantage to the repairs: After the work is completed, the speed limit in the Panenská Tunnel will be raised from 80 to 100 kilometers per hour.
The full closures will take place in the months of April, June, and October, and should be kept in mind to consider possible detours:
To avoid the traffic jams, detour routes will be provided for both car and truck drivers through the Ore Mountains. The problem is that these alternative routes are partly made up of very narrow and winding roads. Therefore, it is especially recommended for truck drivers to take a wider detour and use the border crossings at Reitzenhain or Neugersdorf.
